As the world evolves and technology is ever changing, I don’t think we realize the ephemerality of the simple electronics and gadgets we use daily. We are constantly introduced to the next version of the iPhone, computers, laptops, tablets, smart watches, etc. Interestingly enough, once people are introduced to newer tech, they forget all about the previous versions; however, they remain as important pieces of our history.
Gadgets like cell phones have provided a gateway to communicating with people on a whole different level. Old video games and music cassettes have created timeless memories of entertainment and shear fun with family, our loved ones, or just by ourselves. These are just examples of how we make connections to these items that become an important aspect of our memories. I often find myself saying “Remember when we would record our shows with VHS?” It brings a yearning to return to the past and remember how these objects have changed and transformed our lives whether we realize it or not. I associate special memories with these old gadgets.
Memories that make me reminisce of my childhood and the simplicity of the way things were back then. In this series, brightly colored paper is used to highlight the objects as some were placed next to the modern versions of themselves, while others simply repeated. The color scheme creates the essence of 80’s: fun, upbeat, and change. In retrospect, this series reflects the objects of the past, how they continue to be used, discarded or changed in today’s world.
